Where and how should No-Smoking Near Entrance signs be installed?
We recommend installing signs on or immediately beside every entrance and exit covered by the applicable restriction, including main doors, employee and service entrances, back doors and fire exits. Signs should be clearly visible to people approaching the building, securely mounted for the surface and weather conditions, and kept clear of open doors, landscaping and other obstructions. Some jurisdictions may also require signs near openable windows or air intakes, so local requirements should be confirmed before determining the final locations.
Is the required no-smoking distance the same across Canada?
No. Required distances vary by jurisdiction. British Columbia uses six metres from doorways, open windows and air intakes, Saskatchewan uses three metres, and Nova Scotia uses four metres at places of employment. Toronto requires a nine-metre no-smoking area around entrances and exits to public buildings. Municipal bylaws may establish additional or stricter rules, so signage must reflect the requirements applicable to the property’s location and use.
