Smoke-free and vape-free signage is part of how Ontario workplaces, public places, multi-residential properties, commercial buildings and shared facilities communicate where smoking, cannabis smoking and vaping are not permitted. Under the Smoke-Free Ontario Act, 2017 and Ontario Regulation 268/18, prescribed no smoking and no vaping signs must be posted in appropriate locations and sufficient numbers at enclosed workplaces, enclosed public places and other locations covered by the legislation. Clear signage helps employees, visitors, residents and the public understand the restriction before entering or using the space.
Selecting the right sign depends on the property type, posting location and message that needs to be communicated. Some areas require a provincial no-smoking symbol, some require a no-vaping symbol, and many locations use a combined no-smoking/no-vaping sign to communicate both restrictions in one place. Clear signage also helps property operators support compliance and gives staff, residents, visitors and inspectors a visible reference point for where smoking and vaping are not permitted. In some municipalities, additional outdoor restrictions may apply. In Toronto, for example, Municipal Code Chapter 709 requires no-smoking signage at public building entrances and exits where the nine-metre smoking restriction applies.
We support workplaces, condominiums, hotels, retail properties, public buildings, warehouses, schools, healthcare facilities and multi-site portfolios throughout Ontario and the Greater Toronto Area. For properties across Canada, we can manufacture custom signs with the wording, symbols, dimensions and materials required to address applicable provincial and municipal regulations.
In Ontario, no smoking and no vaping signs are commonly required at entrances, exits and washrooms of enclosed workplaces, enclosed public places and other smoke-free or vape-free areas. The exact posting locations can depend on the type of property, how the space is used and whether additional municipal rules apply. For larger buildings or properties with multiple access points, signs should be placed in sufficient numbers and in visible locations so people understand where smoking and vaping are not permitted.
In many locations, a combined no-smoking/no-vaping sign is the most practical option because it communicates both restrictions in one clear notice. Separate no-smoking or no-vaping signs may still be appropriate when only one message needs to be emphasized, when replacing existing signage, or when a specific provincial or municipal sign format is required for that location. If the property includes entrances, exits, washrooms, controlled rooms, exterior smoking restriction areas or multiple building types, the best approach is to review the full site and choose signage that matches each posting location.
