Clients Ask: Where do “No Smoking” signs need to be installed?

This is one of the most common questions we receive—and for good reason.

Under the Smoke-Free Ontario Act, “No Smoking” and “No Vaping” signs must be posted in all areas where smoking is prohibited, including:

  • All building entrances and exits
  • Common areas such as lobbies, corridors, and washrooms
  • Any additional restricted spaces

In Toronto Municipal Code Chapter 709, smoking is also prohibited within 9 metres of entrances and exits, making exterior signage just as important as interior signage.

From a practical standpoint, we recommend:

  • Installing signs at every entrance, including secondary and service access points
  • Reinforcing signage in high-traffic interior areas
  • Using durable, weather-resistant materials outdoors

Proper placement helps you meet the requirements of the Smoke-Free Ontario Act while making smoking restrictions clear and easy to follow for everyone on site.
