No Parking Signs help communicate where parking is not permitted before it becomes an operational, safety or enforcement concern. Parking restrictions are part of almost every property, but they rarely look the same from one site to another. A condominium may need to keep visitor routes and waste collection areas clear, a commercial plaza may restrict parking near loading zones, while other properties may require dedicated signage for fire hydrants, EV charging stations, private roadways, entrances, drive aisles or service access points.
Although they all carry a no parking message, these signs are designed for different situations. Some identify locations where parking would interfere with emergency response, such as fire hydrant access. In Ontario, drivers must not park within three metres of a fire hydrant, making fire hydrant no parking signs a practical way to reinforce critical clearance areas. Other signs help reserve EV charging stations for vehicles that are actively charging, direct drivers away from private entrances, loading areas or service routes, or support property-specific parking policies. The wording, symbols, arrows, sign size, reflectivity and layout should reflect the purpose of the restriction so drivers can understand exactly what is expected.
At Safety Media, we manufacture No Parking Signs for virtually every parking restriction found on commercial, residential, industrial, institutional, and municipal properties. From standard stock signs to fully customized parking control signage, we help clients select products that match their site, comply with applicable requirements, and create a consistent parking system across the property.
These signs communicate different levels of restriction, and choosing the wrong one can create confusion. In Toronto, for example, a No Parking regulation allows motorists only to load or unload passengers or merchandise, while No Standing allows motorists only to receive or discharge passengers. No Stopping is more restrictive and generally does not allow a driver to stop except to avoid conflict with traffic or follow the direction of a police officer, traffic sign or signal. The right sign depends on whether the location needs to prevent parked vehicles, standing vehicles or stopping altogether.
It depends on where the sign is installed. On public roads, parking restrictions and towing are enforced under municipal by-laws, so a standard No Parking sign is generally sufficient. On private property, towing requirements vary by municipality. In many cases, signs must reference the applicable by-law and include specific towing information to support enforcement. If you are unsure, Safety Media can help identify the requirements for your municipality.
