Effective spill response starts with understanding what could be released, how much material may need to be contained and where response equipment will be needed. The appropriate kit depends on the type of spill, from general liquids and petroleum products to acids or potentially infectious body fluids that require more specialized response materials. Capacity and portability should also reflect the potential release, from compact vehicle and portable kits to larger drum and wheeled systems positioned near higher-volume risks.
Spill preparedness may also be shaped by environmental, fire-safety and workplace requirements that apply to the substances and operations at a particular site. What is the difference between a Universal and an oil-only spill kit?
A Universal spill kit is intended for a broad range of compatible liquids, including many water-based fluids and oils. Oil-only kits are designed specifically for oil and petroleum-based spills and are particularly useful where oil must be collected separately from surrounding water. Acid, biohazard and other specialized spills should be addressed with response products intended for the material involved.
