Product Description
Safety Media’s Tactile & Braille Stair Identification and Level Numbering Signs are designed to identify the assigned stair designation and floor level at exit stair shafts in multi-storey buildings. These signs support accessible wayfinding, emergency navigation and building identification by combining large visual characters, raised tactile text and raised Braille in one stairwell identification sign.
Each sign can be customized with the required stair letter and level number, such as STAIR W / LEVEL 2, based on the building’s approved floor numbering and stair shaft identification system. The visual, tactile and Braille layout helps occupants, visitors, building staff, emergency responders and persons with vision loss recognize their location within the building.
These signs are designed to support current Ontario Building Code Article 3.4.6.19, Floor Numbering and Identification of Stair Shafts, which addresses assigned floor numbers and exit stair shaft designations in visual and tactile forms at doors to exit stair shafts. Final sign wording, placement and layout should match the building’s approved floor numbering, stair designation, fire alarm zone and elevator numbering system.

Where These Signs Are Used:
Tactile & Braille Stairwell Identification and Level Number Signs are used at stairwell doors and exit stair shafts in multi-storey buildings where floor level and stair designation information must be easy to identify. They help support accessible wayfinding, emergency navigation and building code signage projects for residential, commercial, institutional and public buildings.
Use this sign for new construction, retrofit projects, accessibility upgrades, fire and life safety signage updates, building inspection corrections and stairwell identification programs where visual, tactile and Braille information is required at exit stair shafts.
Ontario Building Code and CSA B651 Reference:
Under the current Ontario Building Code framework, tactile stairwell identification signage is connected to Article 3.4.6.19, Floor Numbering and Identification of Stair Shafts, and Article 3.8.3.1, Accessibility Signs. Article 3.4.6.19 requires assigned floor numbers and exit stair shaft designations to be provided in visual and tactile forms at doors to exit stair shafts.
For tactile information signs required by OBC Subsections 3.4.5 and 3.4.6, Article 3.8.3.1 references CSA B651-18, Clauses 4.5.6.2 and 4.5.6.3. Clause 4.5.6.2 includes tactile character criteria for letters and numerals, including raised characters between 0.8 mm and 1.5 mm, sans serif characters, character height between 16 mm and 50 mm, Braille placement near the bottom edge of the sign, and colour contrast of at least 70% between characters and background. Clause 4.5.6.3 applies to tactile pictograms and symbols where they are included in the sign design.
Installation Reference:
For Ontario projects, installation should be reviewed against Ontario Building Code Article 3.8.3.1, Accessibility Signs, together with Article 3.4.6.19, Floor Numbering and Identification of Stair Shafts. Article 3.4.6.19 requires floor numbers and stair shaft designations to be mounted permanently on the wall on both the stair side and floor side at the latch side of doors to exit stair shafts.
Under Article 3.8.3.1, tactile information signs are installed on the wall closest to the latch side of the door, or on the nearest wall on the right side of the door where there is no wall at the latch side. The sign is centred 1500 mm above the finished floor, with the edge of the sign located not more than 300 mm from the door. Final placement should follow the approved project drawings and any direction from the authority having jurisdiction.
Custom Product Note: As these signs are custom assembled to meet your specifications, returns are not accepted.
